About La Salle College

340 Years of Educational Excellence

Building upon a rich Lasallian heritage to transform lives through quality, values-based education in Kenya and across Africa.

Our Mission

Educating hearts and minds to transform lives

Answering the Call to Serve

For more than 340 years, the Brothers of the Christian Schools have believed in the transformative power of education. In Kenya, this belief has taken root through decades of vibrant Lasallian educational service across the country.

Now, with hope in our hearts and faith in our mission, we embark on our most ambitious journey yet: the founding of La Salle College of Education, Science & Technology in Nairobi, Kenya.

This endeavor is not about buildings — it's about answering a call to educate, empower and uplift. It is driven by an undeniable urgency to serve.

Africa's youth deserve access to a high quality, values-based education that prepares them not only for employment, but for lives of ethical leadership and service.

La Salle College of Education, Science & Technology will open its doors to qualified students regardless of their financial ability to pay, and offer them the kind of practical, holistic education that changes communities from within.

This initiative boldly expands the Lasallian charism by renewing our founding mission: to provide transformative education for those most in need, with hearts rooted in faith and hands prepared for service.

The Lasallian Heritage

A Global Legacy of Educational Excellence

Saint John Baptist de La Salle

Saint John Baptist de La Salle

The Patron Saint of Teachers

Saint John Baptist de La Salle, the Patron Saint of Teachers, revolutionized education in his time by teaching in the language of the people, emphasizing practical and relevant instruction as well as grounding students in values that cultivated both competence and conscience.

In 1680, he founded the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools with a simple but radical idea: society is transformed when every young person — including the poor and marginalized — is empowered with access to quality education.

His innovative approach included:

  • Teaching in the vernacular language instead of Latin
  • Simultaneous instruction (teaching students together rather than individually)
  • Practical education focused on real-world skills
  • Values-based formation developing both mind and character

The Lasallian Core Principles

Values That Guide Our Mission

Faith in the Presence of God

We recognize the divine presence in all aspects of education and life. Our educational mission is rooted in the belief that God is present in our students, teachers, and the learning community we build together.

Concern for the Poor and Social Justice

Following Saint John Baptist de La Salle's example, we are dedicated to serving those most in need. We advocate for equity, access to quality education, and systemic change that addresses poverty and injustice.

Quality Education

We are committed to excellence in teaching and learning. Our programs are rigorous, relevant, and designed to prepare students for both meaningful careers and lives of service and ethical leadership.

👥

Respect for All Persons

We honor the dignity and worth of every individual. Our community embraces diversity and creates an environment where all people are valued, respected, and empowered to reach their full potential.

🌍

Inclusive Community

We build communities where students, faculty, and staff work together toward common goals. Our collaborative spirit fosters belonging, mutual support, and collective responsibility for learning and growth.

The Brothers in Africa

Serving communities across the continent for over 150 years

Established Presence

The Brothers of the Christian Schools have been serving African communities since 1865, establishing schools, universities, and teacher training programs across the continent.

Trusted Leadership

Throughout Africa, Lasallian institutions are recognized for academic excellence, ethical formation, and their commitment to serving students from all backgrounds.

Commitment to the Poor

For over 340 years, the Brothers have prioritized education for those most in need, breaking cycles of poverty through transformative learning experiences.

Throughout Africa, the Brothers have earned a reputation as trusted, responsible leaders in education

Lasallian educators in Africa are effectively living the vision of their Founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle, who was known for practical educational innovation. Just as De La Salle provided education that was relevant to poor children in 18th century France, Lasallian educators in 21st century Africa are preparing ethical and competent workers to meet significant workforce needs in the education, science and technology sectors.

Why La Salle College of Education, Science & Technology?

Meeting an Urgent Need

Kenya faces a critical shortage of higher education opportunities. In 2024, nearly 1 million students sat for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), yet only 20 percent were placed into degree programs.

More than three-quarters of qualified students are redirected to diploma, certificate or artisan programs — but many cannot afford tuition or question the quality and relevance of available programs.

This challenge is not unique to Kenya. Across Africa, millions of young people face the same fate: eager to learn, willing to work, and striving for advancement, yet denied opportunity simply because there are no seats available or they cannot afford tuition.

Our Response

La Salle College of Education, Science & Technology will:

  • Expand access: Create 1,300+ new seats for qualified students
  • Ensure affordability: Provide scholarships to 25% of students
  • Deliver quality: Offer programs aligned with workforce needs
  • Build community: Create a shared tuition model where full-paying students enable scholarships for those in need
  • Transform lives: Prepare ethical, competent graduates ready for meaningful careers and community leadership

Sustainability, accountability, and continuous improvement will guide our operations.

"Kenya is full of young people brimming with hope—hungry to learn, eager to work, and determined to build a brighter future. The nation's economy is expanding rapidly, with leading corporations in urgent need of skilled, ethical professionals. At the same time, the Brothers bring with them a legacy of excellence and values-based education that transforms lives. This project is not just an opportunity—it is a powerful win for the students, a win for the country, and a win for all who believe in the promise of education."
